Angel Island, California

The largest island in San Francisco Bay, and the immigration station where roughly a million people were processed between 1910 and 1940.

Detained Chinese immigrants carved poems into the barracks walls, and hundreds survive.
The island has been a Civil War fort, a quarantine station and a missile site.
It is reached only by ferry and is now a state park.
