The Siskiyou County seat in the far north, a Gold Rush town near the Oregon line.

In 1941 locals blocked the highway to promote a State of Jefferson secession movement, abandoned after Pearl Harbor.
The county courthouse displays a large gold nugget collection.
The name comes from a Shasta word for the mountain.
