A gold rush town whose entire downtown is a National Historic Landmark, saved by being bypassed.

Gold was found in Rich Gulch in 1851 and the town boomed, then the railroad went to Medford in 1884 and it stopped.
The Britt Festival has brought music to the hillside since 1963.
More than a hundred buildings survive from the 1800s.
