The Wasco County seat at the eastern end of the Columbia Gorge, where the river narrows and the Oregon Trail ended its overland run.

Celilo Falls, the great Native fishing site upstream, was drowned by The Dalles Dam in 1957.
Google built one of its first data centers here.
The name is French for the flagstones the river once ran over.
