Bellingham is four towns in a coat: Whatcom, Sehome, Bellingham and Fairhaven, which merged between 1890 and 1903 and still read as separate districts.

• The bay was named by George Vancouver in 1792 for a navy official who never saw it.
• Western Washington University sits on the hill above downtown.
• Fairhaven's brick blocks were built during a boom that ended before the buildings were paid for.
