The county seat takes its name from the Chehalis people, whose word is usually given as meaning sand or shifting sands at the river mouth. The town grew where the railroad crossed the Chehalis River and has kept its brick downtown largely intact.
- The Lewis County Historical Museum occupies the 1912 depot at the foot of Market Street.
- The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad runs steam excursions behind locomotive No. 15, built in 1916.
- Chehalis was platted as Saundersville and renamed in the 1880s.
