A former mining town at the foot of the Okanogan highlands, now mostly a fishing and snowmobiling base between two reservoirs.

It was the Okanogan county seat until 1914.
The name is from a Salish word, often given as cloudy or money hole.
The town was nearly wiped out by fire, flood and a rockslide in successive years.
