A logging town at the end of the Sauk valley under Whitehorse Mountain, settled largely by families from North Carolina who came west for the timber.
- The Darrington Bluegrass Festival has run since 1977 and comes straight out of that Appalachian heritage.
- The 2014 Oso landslide cut the highway and isolated the town for months.
