The only incorporated town in the San Juan Islands, and the ferry landing for San Juan Island.

It is named for Joe Friday, a Hawaiian shepherd who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company.
The Whale Museum here was the first in the country devoted to whales in the wild.
The Pig War of 1859, a bloodless standoff with Britain, took place on this island.
