The largest of the Tri-Cities, on the Columbia where the Yakima joins it, grown enormously by the Hanford project and irrigation.

• The Kennewick Man skeleton, found in the river in 1996, is among the oldest human remains found in North America and was repatriated to tribes in 2017.
• The name is from a Native word, often given as grassy place.
• Irrigation turned sagebrush into vineyards here.
