A coal town in the upper Yakima valley with a downtown so intact that a television show used it as a fictional Alaskan village.
- Northern Exposure was filmed here between 1990 and 1995.
- The cemetery has twenty-six separate sections for the immigrant fraternal societies of the miners.
- Black miners were recruited from the South in 1888 during a strike, and their descendants are part of the town.
