The oldest incorporated town in the state, chartered in 1854, on the Puget Sound shore south of Tacoma.

It had the territory's first courthouse, first jail and first Protestant church.
A ferry runs from here to Anderson and Ketron islands.
The name comes from the Steilacoom people.
