The first American settlement on Puget Sound, founded in 1845 at the falls of the Deschutes River.

The Olympia Brewing Company built its brewhouse at the falls in 1906.
The settlers came north specifically to live outside the reach of slavery-era politics in Oregon.
The name comes from Chinook Jargon for waterfall.
