A Methow valley town rebuilt in the 1970s with a western false-front theme, and the gateway to the North Cascades Highway from the east.

The theme was adopted to draw travelers when the highway opened in 1972.
The Shafer Museum occupies the founder's log house.
The valley has one of the largest cross-country ski trail systems in the country.
